Visit historic Danville real estate.Come visit a piece of Danville real estate that is a National Historic Landmark and the site of a medical procedure that made history. The McDowell House Museum is the former home and office of Dr. Ephraim McDowell. An amazing feat happened here when Dr. McDowell removed an ovarian tumor weighing over 22 pounds from a woman named Jane Todd Crawford. The surgery took place on Christmas morning in 1809 and was performed without anesthesia or antisepsis, as these were not known at the time. The surgery proved to be successful. Mrs. Crawford returned home just under a month later and went on to live for 32 more years. This Danville home is important because this was the first time that an ovarian tumor was successfully removed.
